Tutorial 9 of 12

Width & height profiles

The profile tools turn a slice of the point cloud into a 2D graph you can measure on. A Height Profile is a vertical section along a line you draw, with distance along the bottom and height up the side. Use it for ground levels, slopes and clearances. A Width Profile is a box seen from above, a plan of only the points inside it. Use it for widths, wall positions and layouts.

Height profile

  1. 1

Open a survey in the 3D viewer. Open Measure in the toolbar and choose Height Profile.

  2. 2

Click a start point and an end point on the point cloud. The section line is drawn between them, and the Measurement panel shows both points. A right-click cancels the line.

WIDTH (auto) is the thickness of the slice, set from your zoom level. Change it if you need a thinner or thicker slice, then click Show 2D Profile.

Width profile

  1. 4

Open Measure and choose Width Profile. A box follows your cursor over the point cloud. Click to drop it.

Fit the box to the area you want. The Measurement panel shows its position, rotation, length, width, height and volume, with reset orientation and make uniform. (UI may differ)

Click Show 2D Profile. The graph shows only the points inside the box, seen from above.

Measure and export

  1. 7

Use the tools on the left of the graph: Distance, Height, Angle, Circle and Area measurement. Click any point on the graph to inspect it. Each measurement is listed under Scene at the bottom of the panel.

  2. 8

Click Export and choose Image (PNG), PDF, CSV (2D) or LAS (3D).

Good to know

  • Use a height profile for a section along a line, such as a road, slope or rail cross-section. Use a width profile for a plan of one area, such as a corridor or a floor.
  • For a width profile, the rotate and move buttons at the top of the graph turn or shift the box, and the box in the 3D view follows.
  • Both profiles are saved under Measurements in the Scene panel, so you can open them again later.
