Hard Hat Camera: Record Your Site Hands-Free
You already walk the site every week. A camera on your hard hat turns that walk into a record, without taking a single photo.
Put a 360° camera on your hard hat and walk your usual route. Trace pins the walk to your floor plan and sends it to SpatialSense, dated, for your whole team to open.
Trace access is set up on a free demo, with 30 days free. Or start a 14-day self-serve trial with no credit card.

What is a hard hat camera used for?
A hard hat with a camera solves a simple problem: the person who walks the site most often is usually too busy to stop and take good photos. A helmet-mounted camera records the walk as it happens, so the record exists whether or not anyone remembered to reach for a phone.
Teams use them for progress records, for showing the office or the client what the site looks like without a visit, for capturing work before it gets covered up, and for settling questions later about what was there and when.
Two kinds of hard hat camera
The right one depends on what you want to do with the footage afterwards.
| Forward-facing camera | 360° camera on top | |
|---|---|---|
| What it records | Only what the wearer is facing | Every direction around the wearer, in one pass |
| Typical use | Point-of-view footage, remote assistance, training clips | Site documentation, progress records, remote site reviews |
| What you get after | A video file you scrub through to find a moment | A walk you can look around in — and, with the right software, open at a spot on the floor plan |
| Main limitation | If you did not look at it, it is not on record | Needs software to organise the walk, or it becomes another long video file |
Some helmets are sold with a camera built into the shell, usually forward-facing. Whatever you choose, check that the helmet still carries the safety certification your site requires.
What to look for
Safety first. The mount must not weaken the helmet. Do not drill the shell, and check the hard hat maker’s guidance on adhesives, stickers and accessories, plus your site’s PPE rules, before you fix anything to it.
Coverage. For documentation, a 360° camera on the crown of the helmet records the whole room in one walk. A forward-facing camera only records where you happened to look.
A secure mount and a tether. A camera that wobbles produces shaky footage, and one that falls off on a slab edge is a hazard to the people below.
Battery and storage for your longest walk. Test the setup on a full walk before you rely on it, and carry a spare battery if the walk is long.
What happens to the footage. A folder of unnamed video files nobody watches is not a record. Decide up front where walks go and how they are filed by location and date.
Privacy on site. A helmet camera records the people around you. Tell the team, and follow your company’s policy and local rules on recording.
How to set up a hard hat camera for site walks
- Fit the mount at the top centre of the hard hat, so the camera sits above your head and level.
- Attach the camera, tighten it, and clip on a tether.
- Check your clearance. The camera adds height, so watch doorways, scaffold and low services.
- Start recording before you enter the area, then walk your usual route at a steady pace.
- Upload the walk and file it by project, floor and date, so the next walk lines up with this one.

Common mistakes
Mounting the camera on the side. The helmet blocks part of the view and the camera sits off balance. For 360° capture, mount it on top.
Walking a different route every time. If this week’s walk does not cover the same ground as last week’s, you cannot compare them.
Turning fast and rushing. Quick head turns and a fast pace make footage harder to use. Walk steadily and let the camera do the looking.
Leaving footage on the camera. Walks that never get uploaded and filed are walks nobody will find when a question comes up.
How Trace turns a helmet walk into a site record
Trace is the SpatialSense 360° capture app for iOS and Android. Mount an Insta360 X4 or X5 on your hard hat, start Video Mode and walk your usual route. Trace records the whole walk and lines it up with the floor plan, and every capture is GPS-tagged and timestamped.
Trace records with no signal and uploads in the background once you are back in range. The walk lands in SpatialSense, where anyone with access opens it in the browser, jumps room to room on the plan and looks around in 360°. Use your own Insta360 X4 or X5, or we supply a kit.

Frequently asked questions
Which camera do I need?
Trace works with an Insta360 X4 or X5. Use your own, or we supply a kit. We will talk through what fits your sites in the demo.
Do I need a special hard hat?
No. The camera sits on a mount on your hard hat so your hands stay free. Check the helmet maker's guidance and your site's PPE rules before fixing anything to it. We help you choose the setup that suits your site.
Is it really free?
Trace is live, and you get access by booking a demo, which also gives you a 30-day free trial with your first site onboarded. Or start a 14-day self-serve trial and explore with a sample dataset. The 14-day free trial also covers uploading and working with your own walks. Paid plans start from USD 500 per site per month, with unlimited users.
Does it work underground or offline?
Yes. Trace saves walks on the phone first, so it keeps recording in basements and tunnels with no signal. Uploads run in the background and retry when the connection comes back.
What if the site has no floor plan?
Video Mode works without one. You can also upload a floor plan (PDF or image) straight from Trace, and it syncs back to SpatialSense.
Is my data private?
Yes. Projects are private by default and access is role-based — only people you invite can open your walks.
