Insta360 X5 Helmet Mount: Setup for Construction Site Walks
The camera is the easy part. Where it sits on the helmet decides whether the walk is usable.
Mount your Insta360 X5 on your hard hat and record the site with Trace. Every walk is pinned to your floor plan and opens in the browser for your whole team.
Trace access is set up on a free demo, with 30 days free. Or start a 14-day self-serve trial with no credit card.

Top mount or side mount?
For 360° site documentation, mount the camera on top. With the X5 above your head, the camera sees the whole room around you and your helmet sits below the lenses rather than across them.
Side mounts are common for action footage, but on a 360° camera the helmet blocks part of the view, and the off-centre weight pulls the helmet to one side over a long walk.
Choosing a helmet mount for the X5
How it attaches to the helmet. Mounts either stick to the shell with an adhesive base or hold on with a strap or clamp. Do not drill the shell, and check the hard hat maker’s guidance on adhesives and accessories, and your site’s PPE rules, before fitting one.
Compatibility with the X5. Confirm the mount maker lists the X5 as compatible, directly or through a standard adapter. Do not assume a mount made for another camera fits.
Rigidity. Any wobble in the mount shows up as shake in the walk. A short, stiff mount beats a long, flexible arm.
Quick release. A mount that lets you lift the camera off between walks makes charging and storing it easier, and keeps the camera from riding around on the helmet all day.
A tether. Clip the camera to the helmet with a tether as a second line of defence, especially near slab edges and openings.
Step-by-step setup
- Clean the area on top of the hard hat, and fit the mount at the top centre, following the mount maker’s instructions.
- Attach the X5 so it sits upright and level, then tighten it and clip on the tether.
- Put the helmet on and check your clearance in doorways, under scaffold and below low services.
- Check the battery, storage and lenses, and that the camera’s date and time are right — the walk’s timestamp depends on it.
- Connect the camera to Trace on your phone, pick the project and floor plan, pin your start point and walk.
Common mistakes
Mounting it off-centre. A camera tilted to one side gives a tilted walk and uneven coverage. Line it up with the centre of the helmet.
Dirty or scratched lenses. Dust on site settles on the lenses fast. Check them before every walk, not after.
Starting the walk late. Start recording before you enter the area, so the first room is on record too.
Changing the route every week. Walk the same route each visit, so two dated walks can be compared viewpoint to viewpoint.
Forgetting the extra height. The camera sits above your head. Low doorways and services are where helmet-mounted cameras get knocked.
Using the Insta360 X5 with Trace
Trace, the SpatialSense capture app for iOS and Android, works with an Insta360 X4 or X5. Mount the camera on your hard hat, start Video Mode and walk your usual route. Trace records the whole walk and lines it up with the floor plan. If you need fixed viewpoints you can repeat on the next visit, Capture Mode pins a 360° photo to each point on the plan instead.
Walks are saved on the phone first, so Trace keeps recording when the signal drops, and uploads in the background once you are back in range. Use your own X5, or we supply a kit.

Frequently asked questions
Does Trace work with the Insta360 X5?
Yes. Trace works with an Insta360 X4 or X5. Use your own, or we supply a kit.
How does the camera go on a helmet?
The camera sits on a mount on your hard hat so your hands stay free. You can also hold it, use a pole, or put it on a car with a suction mount and drive the site roads in Car Mode. We help you choose the setup that suits your site.
Is it really free?
Trace is live, and you get access by booking a demo, which also gives you a 30-day free trial with your first site onboarded. Or start a 14-day self-serve trial and explore with a sample dataset. The 14-day free trial also covers uploading and working with your own walks. Paid plans start from USD 500 per site per month, with unlimited users.
Does it work underground or offline?
Yes. Trace saves walks on the phone first, so it keeps recording in basements and tunnels with no signal. Uploads run in the background and retry when the connection comes back.
Which phones does Trace run on?
Trace runs on iOS and Android, and you sign in with your SpatialSense account. Walks upload to your SpatialSense projects.
Is my data private?
Yes. Projects are private by default and access is role-based — only people you invite can open your walks.
