How Do I Know If My Construction Project Is On Schedule?

On most projects we see, the first sign of a delay is someone else’s update in a meeting, by which time the slip is already old news. A dated record of what has actually been built changes that, because you can hold it up against the plan yourself on any day you choose.

Two dates, one viewpoint

In SpatialSense, every site walk is mapped to the plan, so you can open the same viewpoint from two different days side by side, with both panes locked together as you pan and zoom. Work reported as complete either is or isn’t, and a disputed date is settled by the record rather than by memory. The chief architect on an embassy build in Islamabad signs off progress this way every week from Europe, without flying in. Seven dated captures took that site from bare ground to a full steel frame in 24 days.

Compare in SpatialSense: walks of the same floor from 1 and 21 September, side by side, each on its own floor plan. Sample project.

Put a number on it

For work you can quantify, a point cloud turns progress into a figure. On excavation, the volume dug is measured against the target volume, which gives you the percent complete and exactly how much is left. Where you have a BIM model, a progress report breaks the site down zone by zone and shows the percent complete in each against the plan. The zone furthest behind is the one your next coordination meeting should start with.

Check as often as the risk demands

Weekly 360° walks or drone flights suit client reviews and payment checks, while daily walks suit active work fronts. For work that gets covered the same day, such as pours and backfills, fixed ScanStations take a point cloud every 15–30 minutes. On a public-works site in Hong Kong they have done exactly that since June 2024, around the clock, with nobody on site to trigger them. Results from a walk are ready within a few hours, so a slip shows up while there’s still time to recover it.

When something is behind, raise it as an issue on the capture itself, with an owner and a due date, and the board follows it from To Do through to Completed.
